Cushing's Disease

Cushing's Disease (Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction) is a serious hormonal condition in which the pituitary gland is damaged resulting in the over production of normal pituitary hormones. The disease is increasingly common in horses and ponies aged over 10 years and can have significant impact on the health and well-being of the animal if not identified and managed. Clinical signs include a long, curly coat, delayed shedding of winter coat, lethargy, laminitis, sweating, weight loss and increased drinking and urination.

Meadows Veterinary Centre can help you obtain a definitive diagnosis for your horse using clinical exam and blood analysis. We can also provide you with effective daily medication to treat Cushing's Disease and management advice to ensure that your horse or pony are feeling their best.
